Catching Distinguished Pitchers
Carl Mays's Battery Mates
Carl Mays pitched for Boston (AL) 1915-1919; New York (AL) 1919-1923; Cincinnati (NL) 1924-1928; and New York (NL) 1929. He pitched in 490 games, made 324 starts, had 231 complete games and pitched 29 shutouts. One of Mays's shutouts was with more than one catcher.
@ One of these games (8/16/1920 NYA vs CLE) Mays' pitch (5th inning) struck Ray Chapman
in the head and the bean ball crushed his skull. Chapman was carried off the field and subsequently died the next morning.
